The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said this year's rice harvest of 3.5 million tons is the lowest in 52 years, and noted the impact of the long monsoon and multiple typhoons. The ministry said that from late December, it will begin releasing in phases some 370-thousand tons of reserved rice into the market to cope with the reduced output. It added the amount will be adjusted in consideration of rice demand and market situation.
The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage has revealed that it found a 3 meter long anchor stone belonging to a large medieval Chinese trade ship in waters off Sinchangri on Jejudo Island. Underwater excavation work took place in the area for 2 months since May. The Sinchangri area is treasure trove of porcelain relics dating back to China's Southern Song Dynasty era. The discovered stone, which was used to tie up a ship anchor, has a diamond shape with a thick center and slender edges.
