The central Chungcheong region of the country saw nearly 300mm of rain on Sunday. The torrential rain has caused serious damage, with some cities in the area seeing significant flooding.

Heavy rain keeps pouring in the central region of Korea. Because of the downpour, streams in cities rose over their banks in no time. Vehicles that were parked near the streams became submerged in rainwater. Major motorways in the city of Cheongju became flooded one by one. Traffic in the city ground to a halt, as even moving cars became stranded in the rapidly rising water.

[Soundbite] Lim Sang-yeol(Bus Driver) : "We can't drive buses because of the flooding. I have received a call from my company telling me to stop the bus where it is right now."

Thirty-four sections on national and provincial roads in Chungcheongbuk-do Province were blocked due to flooding and falling rocks and soil. Streams in Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do Province, also overflowed, resulting in bank collapses.

[Soundbite] Yoo Jae-yong(Cheonan Resident) : "It has been pouring for more than an hour now. It's beyond words. That stream over there has overflown, turning into a lake."

Cheongju in Chungcheongbuk-do Province has seen 290 mm of rain, while Cheonan received 232 mm. The downpour of up to 91 mm of rain per hour has caused serious damage in various regions.
