Christmas is still a month away, but Christmas trees can already be seen on the streets of Korea. Retailers hope that the holiday mood will encourage consumers to spend more.

A department store building has been transformed into a gigantic gift box. A gorgeous Christmas tree adorned with beautiful garlands catches the eyes of passers-by.

[Soundbite] Kang Yoo-ra(Department Store Staff) : "The large ribbon embracing the building makes it look like a gigantic gift box."

This Christmas tree stands 20 meters tall. The colorful LED lights adorning the wall of the department store create a mesmerizing view. This year, department stores began to prepare for the year-end holiday season about two weeks earlier than usual. This is because their sales revenues posted during the final two months of the year will determine their overall performance in 2017. With seven of the ten best selling days of the year in December alone, about 30 percent of department stores' annual sales come at the end of the year. The year-end holiday season is the final chance for department stores to avert sluggish performances, as their sales posted a decline for five consecutive months in the first half of the year due to an increase in direct overseas purchasing. Another reason behind the early Christmas decorations is the fact that many department stores in the world's major cities emerged as popular tourist attractions because of their Christmas trees.

[Soundbite] Shin Tae-rim(Department Store Staff) : "We want to make our department store a Christmas landmark, as well as attract consumers and encourage them to spend more."

Department stores in Korea are trying hard to lure customers with eye-catching holiday decorations.
