Hanji paper hailing from Korea's Jeonju city has made its way into the Vatican in Rome, known for its treasure trove of UNESCO Memory of the World records. Mayor of Jeonju Kim Seung-Su delivered Vatican records copied on hanji paper to Pope Francis and the archbishop in charge of the Vatican secret archives.

[Soundbite] Pope Francis : "Thank you. I always pray for peace on the Korean Peninsula."

The records include a letter sent to Pope Saint Pius X by Korean emperor Gojong congratulating him, as well as letters by Catholic priests.

[Soundbite] Kim Seung-su(Mayor of Jeonju) : "We restored Emperor Gojong's letter found at the Vatican museum on Jeonju hanji paper, which lasts for hundreds of years, and gave it to the pope as a gift."

Jeonju also struck an agreement with UNESCO to use traditional Korean paper in the preservation of African world heritage properties. Jeonju hanji has also been used in restoring a desk of King Maximilian II of Bavaria on display at the Louvre Museum in Paris, and also for decorating embassies overseas. Jeonju hanji has begun to be known around the world and is thereby uplifting the cultural value of Korea.
