Look to the skies in Korea and you might find that drones are gaining popularity at a brisk rate. Aside from recreation, they are now being used for a wide array of purposes, from environmental monitoring to bird flu prevention. The government of Ulsan City has even designated a drone-fly zone.​

A drone soars into the sky above a lush forest. Using its high-performance camera, the drone detects and locates pine trees that have been affected with pine wilt disease and enters their coordinates. Then an artificial intelligence program analyzes the coordinates and presents an accurate infection route in real time.

[Soundbite] Ha Woo-seok(Daekyung ENG) : "It's difficult for people to find every contaminated tree. That's why we use drones."

This drone scatters a disinfectant over a bamboo forest. In the near future, drones will be deployed to trace avian influenza infection routes to identify the cause. Ulsan City has recently designated a drone-fly zone, and plans to build a logistics system to deliver ship supplies using drones.

[Soundbite] Kim Seok-myung(Ulsan City Official) : "By designating drone-fly zone, the local drone industries are expected to spread and to play important roles in enhancing competitive advantages of drones."

The diverse use of drones merged with advanced technologies is ushering in a new era.
