The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said a North Korean soldier defected to the South by crossing the Demilitarized Zone Thursday morning. Military authorities said he was a low-ranking soldier, who appeared in front of a guard post on the mid-western front just after 8:00 a.m. amid thick fog. Later in the morning, North Korean border guards looking for the soldier approached the military demarcation line. The South fired some 20 warning shots in response.
