It all began with a historic handshake on the military demarcation line. President Moon Jae-in greeted North Korean leader Kim Jong-un warmly this morning – the leaders of the two Koreas meeting for the first time in over a decade. In a surprise, unscripted moment in this highly choreographed summit, the North Korean leader invited Moon to step across the dividing line for another handshake and a few photos on the northern side of the JSA. Moon and Kim walked side by side, welcomed by South Korea’s colorful honor guard. Upon their arrival at the summit venue, Kim was asked to write a message in the visitors' log. He wrote "a new history begins now" and "an age of peace, at the starting point of history." The first summit meeting began at 10:15 a.m., about 15 minutes earlier than scheduled. Kim Jong-un told President Moon Jae In that he is willing to visit the presidential Blue House anytime when invited, and that he make sure to not interrupt his morning sleep anymore The North Korean leader also said he had been overwhelmed with emotion walking the 200 meters toward the military demarcation line, and that he was determined to start new history of peace and prosperity. President Moon replied by offering to hold extensive discussions about everything the two sides have wanted to say over the past decade, adding that the moment the North Korean leader crossed the military demarcation line, Panmunjom became a symbol of peace. This marks the third summit between the two Koreas. The previous two meetings were held in 2000 and 2007 – each in Pyongyang.
