Last year, South Korea received the largest-ever number of foreign tourists at 17.5 million. In particular, there was a noticeable increase in the number of Chinese tourists. With large groups of Chinese tourists visiting South Korea in the new year, there are hopes that such numbers will go back to levels seen before Beijing took anti-Korean measures three years ago.

Groups of Chinese elementary and middle school students are visiting South Korea on their winter school trip. Starting with the first group, which arrived last Friday, a total of some 3,500 Chinese students will visit South Korea by early February. This is the largest number of Chinese students visiting South Korea on school trips in three years. During their stay here, the students will enjoy winter sports and have a glimpse into Korea's history and tradition through visits to Gyeongbokgung Palace and the National Museum of Korea. Large groups of Chinese tourists are coming back to South Korea at the start of the new year. Last week, South Korea greeted roughly 5,000 employees of a Chinese wholesome foods company. This is the largest number of visitors from a single Chinese firm since Beijing's apparent retaliation against Seoul's deployment of a U.S. anti-missile system back in 2017.

[Soundbite] (CHINESE TOURIST) : "I have learned about Korean food and culture while watching Korean TV shows. I wanted to come and experience it directly."

Amid the Seoul-Beijing feud over THAAD, the number of inbound Chinese tourists almost halved in 2017 from eight million the year before. But the number bounced back to some six million last year, accounting for 34 percent of total foreign travelers visiting South Korea.

[Soundbite] KIM MIN-HYE(INCHEON TOURISM ORGANIZATION) : "We are hopeful since there are palpable changes, such as tourists' growing interest and increased visits."

Upon seeing the return of Chinese tourists, the domestic tourism industry is optimistic of a brighter future.
