The film "Parasite" has earned six nominations, including best picture, for the prestigious Academy Awards to be held next month. It's become the first South Korean movie to make it to the final nominees list and compete at the Oscars. Parasite has already won the best foreign language film award at the Golden Globes and could pick up the honor for best international feature film at the Academy as well.

"Parasite," the first ever Korean film to win a Golden Globe, is now eyeing an Oscar. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the final list of nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards on Monday local time. Parasite earned six nominations including best picture, best director, best original screenplay, best international feature film, production design and film editing. It will contend for the top honor alongside 'The Irishman', 'Joker' and '1917.' Bong Joon-ho is listed with legendary Hollywood directors including Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino. In the 101 year history of South Korean cinema, it's the first time a Korean film earned these Oscar nominations. If Parasite grabs an Oscar, it would have swept all the top film awards in Europe and North America, following its Palme d'Or win at Cannes as well as a Golden Globe.

[Soundbite] SONG KANG-HO(ACTOR, "PARASITE") : "The Golden Globes is huge and an important ceremony but it's a lead-up to the Oscars which is really the main event."

Another Korean film earned an oscar nomination. "In the Absence," about the Sewol ferry tragedy, made the documentary short category list. The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles on February 9th.
