Lee Yong-soo, victim of the Japanese wartime sex slavery, held a press conference to state her opposition to the removal of a Statue of Peace, also known as a "comfort woman statue," in Berlin, Germany. She also visited the German Embassy in Korea to discuss her visit to Germany.

Lee Yong-soo, a survivor of Japan's wartime sex slavery, showed up at the National Assembly. She explicitly opposed the removal of a Statue of Peace erected in Berlin, Germany last month, stating that the removal is an historical sin. She also stressed the statue's removal in Germany is unthinkable as the country apologized for wartime crimes, unlike Japan.

[Soundbite] LEE YONG-SOO(JAPANESE WARTIME SEX SLAVERY VICTIM) : "It is wrong to demand the removal of the Statue of Peace. The statue represents the victims' sorrow and resentment and lies at the heart of future generation's education."

After her press conference, she visited the German Embassy in South Korea. She met with an embassy official to deliver a hand-written statement, urging Germany to keep the statue erected. She also spoke about Jan Ruff-O'Herne, a Dutch victim of Japan's wartime sex slavery, and expressed her wish to visit her grave in Germany. Lee Yong-soo said the German Embassy understood her request.

[Soundbite] "His Excellency said he would meet with me one day. I'm satisfied with Germany's answers."

Surprisingly, Lee Na-young, the chairwoman of the board for the Korean Council for Justice and Remembrance for the Issues of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan, who has been at odds with Lee Yong-soo over the comfort women advocacy movement, accompanied her to both the press conference and the German Embassy. The first Statue of Peace was erected in 2011 to commemorate the 1,000th Wednesday protest. Similar statues were built at some 140 locations in Korea and 30 cities in nine other countries.
