Senior foreign ministry officials of South Korea and Japan held in-person talks for the first time since the COVID-19 outbreak. Held in Seoul on October 29, the director-level meeting discussed various bilateral pending issues, including Japan's wartime forced labor and current export curbs on South Korea. The two officials last met in early February. Attention is being drawn to whether or not the two sides will make progress in the director-level meeting.
Samsung Electronics reported record quarterly earnings despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The tech giant announced on October 29 it posted nearly 67 trillion won in sales in the third quarter, exceeding its previous quarterly record of some 66 trillion won, set in 2017. Its operating profit also jumped nearly 59 percent year on year to over 12 trillion won in the same period. Analysts say this strong performance is mainly thanks to robust sales of mobile devices and home appliances.
