Following its own investigation, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has acknowledged a previous report made by KBS that defective fuel hoses could be the cause of recent incidents of fire involving BMW vehicles. BMW Korea, which refused to admit any wrongdoing, will now notify the ministry's probe results to its customers.

Something leaks from inside the engine of a BMW vehicle. It's none other than fuel leaking from the fuel hose. KBS has confirmed that when the leaked fuel touches a vehicle component of high temperature, a fire can occur. Some 30 BMW cars caught on fire while on the road last year. Since the series of KBS reports, BMW Korea has issued a voluntary recall but denied any connection between the fires and the fuel hose. However, the Transport Ministry on Thursday announced probe results completely different from BMW's claims.

[Soundbite] Go Seon-woo(Ministry of Land, Infrastructure & Transport) : "Cracks in the hose have leaked fuel which can cause fire."

The automaker is now expected to announce a revised recall notice stating that defects in the fuel hose could lead to possible fires.

[Soundbite] Official, BMW Korea(Voice modified) : "As the ministry announced, the part denoting 'cause of possible fire' will be reflected in our revised recall notice."

Despite continuous fire incidents, BMW Korea has been lackluster in identifying the cause. Measures are necessary to enable car manufacturers to more swiftly respond to vehicle defects which directly concern the safety of drivers.
