Korean researchers have developed an innovative near field communication technology that enables users to download large files like movies in just three seconds thanks to its high data transmission speed.

Near field communication makes it possible to exchange data at a short distance of about ten centimeters. But so far it has been used only in limited fields such as mass transit cards, because the transmission speed is too low. Korean researchers have overcome the limitations of near field communication by developing the so-called ZING technology. This next-generation technology boasts data transmission speeds of 3.5 giga bps, which is eight thousand times faster than existing near field communication technologies. It takes just three seconds to transmit a one-gigabyte movie. Unlike previous technologies, which use low frequencies and narrow bandwidth, the new technology offers high-speed broadband near field communication services.

[Soundbite] Lee Mun-shik(ETRI) : "The ZING technology can transmit large amounts of data because it uses ultra-high frequency of 60GHz and broad bandwidth."

The researchers say that the new technology is simple to use and lucrative, as the 60Ghz band can be used as an unlicensed bandwidth and only consumes one-tenth of the power required by a smartphone. The technology will adopt international standards early next year. The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute plans to transfer the technology to businesses to develop diverse products.
