Ocean desertification has been found to be getting more severe in the East Sea, as the seaweed that typically grows there is disappearing. But fishermen in a coastal village in Gangwon-do Province have demonstrated that the problem can be fixed if people stop harvesting seaweed.

This sea bedrock has turned white. Sea desertification caused by the disappearance of seaweed in the ocean due to higher water temperatures and overfishing has affected 62 percent of the East Sea coast. However, the situation is completely different in this part of the sea, full of colonies of seaweed and diverse sea creatures. Local fishermen say this was possible thanks to the efforts to prevent seaweed harvesting since November 2015 to revive the community fishing ground.

[Soundbite] Park Chul-bu(Local Resident) : "Ever since we stopped catching anything in sea, the population of seaweed and sea creatures has grown a lot."

Instead of harvesting seaweed, the fishermen make a living through gillnetting and tourism fishing.

[Soundbite] Prof. Kim Hyung-keun(Gangneung-Wonju National University) : "The best way is to stay away from harvesting seaweed. Leaving the spores intact is a good way to ensure growth and prevent desertification."

While the central and local governments are struggling to stop sea desertification, just stopping seaweed harvesting has emerged as a viable solution.
