Singer G-Dragon's latest album, released not as a CD but in a USB format, is getting a lot of buzz in the music industry these days. The dominant view seems to be that the USB shouldn’t be recognized as an album but others argue the emergence of new media should be embraced.

This red USB drive is singer G-Dragon's latest solo album. The USB allows access to a certain website. The user can then download the music

[Soundbite] Oh Geon-woo(Purchased G-Dragon's album) : "Laptop computers are slim these days and don't include a CD slot. I think more people will buy a USB drive."

Gaon Chart, a leading domestic music portal, has said that it's difficult to recognize the USB drive as an "album," as it does not contain a fixed sound source. The chart said it therefore can't be included in the album sales tally.

[Soundbite] Official, Gaon Chart(Voice modified) : "G-Dragon's USB is not reflected in our company's album sales tally. We see it as a download service."

Overseas, artists like Lady Gaga have previously released USB albums, and opinions remain split within the music industry.

[Soundbite] Ja-gak(CEO, Hanteo Chart) : "I believe USB drives should of course be regarded as albums. The delivery formats of music will continue to evolve in the future. We can't say every time that they are not albums."

G-Dragon has expressed regret, saying what matters is the music, not the format. The USB drive controversy is proving to be another point of concern for the music sector in its definition of new media, as the format of music has continuously evolved from LPs to CDs and now digital files.
