The record downpours have resulted in casualties. Two people died in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do Province where landslides dealt a deadly blow. Meanwhile people have gone missing in Boeun and Goesan in that province as well as in Sangju in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province after being swept away by the torrents.

The side of this house that was facing a mountain slope has completely tilted. A utility pole lies across the front yard and household supplies are covered in mud. Two people have lost lives in a landslide in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do Province where as much as 100 millimeters of precipitation per hour was reported. An elderly resident in Boeun, Chungcheongbuk-do Province who went out to check the sluice gate of a rice paddy and two men in their 70s and 80s in Goesan have also gone missing after being swept away by rapid currents. In Sangju, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, authorities are looking for a 60-something camper who was swept away by swollen valley water.

[Soundbite] angju Fire Station Official : "We installed ropes at a location 5km from where the victim went missing as part of rescue efforts."

Flood damage also continues to mount. 670 homes have been inundated in the central Gangwon and Chungcheong provinces resulting in 661 displaced flood victims. Over 49-hundred hectares of farmland, 77 greenhouses and 52 vehicles have also been flooded. The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters issued a level one emergency alert Sunday morning and are inspecting 16-hundred casualty-prone areas as well as 3,000 locations vulnerable to natural disasters.
