For many students coming to Seoul to study from provincial areas across the country, getting a spot in a college dormitory is a challenge. Renting a room might be out of the question due to high costs. But the Seoul City government says it may have a solution – building public dormitories sponsored by the local governments of the students’ residence. Let’s check it out.

Kim Ji-soo is a college senior who moved to this public dormitory a year and a half ago. The monthly fee for a two-person room is 120,000 won. The dormitory was built by the Seoul City government, while the rental fee is provided by the government of Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do Province, where Ji-soo is from.

[Soundbite] Kim Ji-soo(College Student) : "There is no deposit here and the monthly rent is cheap. It's very appealing to students in terms of price."

Currently, some 380 students live in the dormitory, which features a cafeteria, a fitness club, a parcel storage space, a computer room and a library. Students from 14 regions can stay at this dormitory without worrying about the rent.

[Soundbite] Kim Ji-soo(College Student) : "The room is separated into two sections. It's almost like living in an individual room."

As the public dormitory received positive feedback, the Seoul City government decided to allocate 60 rooms in public housing apartments to be built for young people in the Sinchon area as public dormitory rooms. Students from six regions including Gangwon-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do provinces can stay there for just about 100,000 won a month.

[Soundbite] Park Won-soon(Seoul Mayor) : "Although the scale of this project is very small, I believe it can pave the way for solving the housing problem for students."

The Seoul City Urban Planning Committee has also approved the construction of a new dormitory at Hanyang University. The new facility is expected to help ease students' housing woes.
