The latest mobile gaming phenomenon is Pokémon Go, but there is no official release date for Korea in sight. As news spread among Pokémon fans that it is possible to play the game in Sokcho and some other areas in Korea, many gamers are flocking to the region in an unexpected boon for local tourism.

People holding smartphones are wander through a park. They are playing Pokémon Go, an augmented reality mobile game in which the player's own surroundings serve as the background. The game has not yet been officially released in Korea, but with news that it's possible to play the game in some areas of the country such as Sokcho, people are flocking to these destinations. They come to play the game but their arrival is naturally boosting local tourism.

[Soundbite] Lee Hye-jin(Tourist) : "I had cold raw fish soup as soon as I arrived. I ate a small portion on purpose to eat other things as well. Since I'm here anyway, I will also visit many tour sites. Nearby restaurants and accommodations are enjoying a spike in customers."

[Soundbite] Song Su-yeong(Vendor) : "I notice more young people among the customers. It's a clear boost to our business."

Travel agencies are even launching tour packages that combine Pokémon Go and regional tours. The city of Sokcho has increased its support for visitors.

[Soundbite] Lee Byung-seon(Sokcho Mayor) : "We aim to expand free Wi-Fi zones all across the city."

With gamers learning that they can play the mobile game in places such as Goseong and Yangyang in addition to Sokcho, competition is heating up among local governments to attract more tourists.
