The North Korea-China border area near the Tumen River was pummeled with as much as nearly 300 millimeters of rain since August 29th due to a typhoon. The Chinese city of Tumen, located across the border from Namyang in Hamkyongbuk-do Province in North Korea, ordered its 30,000 residents to evacuate.
[Soundbite] Chinese Soldier : "That's a dam blocking the water. We're repairing it now."
Only the upper part of the bridge spanning over to North Korea can be seen above the water.
[Soundbite] Tumen Resident : "There is a North Korean elementary school across the river. It's already flooded."
Almost no human casualties were reported in China, but damages to North Korean cities across the river are said to be quite severe. The city center of Namyang in North Korea is mostly submerged. In the Rason Special Economic Zone as well, hundreds of homes have been destroyed and thousands of people displaced. Local media reported that the recent torrential rain has caused the Tumen River to rise to its highest level since weather observations started 100 years ago.
