Panzi Hospital is located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in central Africa. The hospital's director Denis Mukwege and medical staff are discussing treatments for rape victims. Ruthless sexual attacks on women have been rampant amid a civil war between the government and rebel forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Dr. Mukwege founded Panzi Hospital in 1999 to focus on treating women subjected to sexual violence. As of last year, some 48,000 women who were victims of sexual assault received help from the hospital.

[Soundbite] Dr. Denis Mukwege : "I intend to treat these women who are overcoming unspeakable suffering with their faith in life and stand by those who need me."

Dr. Mukwege was threatened with assassination for speaking at the United Nations to urge its members to come together to end the civil war and put a stop to sexual violence. Despite the threat to his life, he still personally looks after some 20 patients every day. In recognition of Dr. Mukwege's courageous devotion, the Seoul Peace Prize Selection Committee selected him as the 13th recipient of the Seoul Peace Prize.

[Soundbite] Kwon E-Hyock(Chair, Seoul Peace Prize Selection Committee) : "He is putting his love for humanity into action by helping women and children who have lost their livelihoods."

The award ceremony for Dr. Mukwege will be held on October 6th in Seoul.
