In regions directly hit by Typhoon Chaba, many residents didn't sleep at all, rather joining restoration efforts. However, the damage is so huge that it’s hard to figure out where to begin.

Typhoon Chaba has left a trail of destruction in Ulsan's Taewha Market. Bereft of the venue through which they make their living, merchants are hard at work with restoration efforts. They pump out water from underground and wash furnishings, but it is nowhere near enough.

[Soundbite] Kim Young-hwan(Ulsan Resident) : "I put all my assets into the business. I don't know what to do. The situation just feels hopeless."

A merchant looks around her store, which was almost instantly covered in mud. She feels hopeless, faced with the daunting task of restoration.

[Soundbite] Kim Myung-sook(Ulsan Resident) : "I don't dare to begin restoration. I am an old person. I don't know what to do."

The entrance of an apartment complex resembles a war zone, where people were swept away by a swollen river and even died. Cars trapped in underground parking lots were removed overnight, but some 200 vehicles remain under water. With the electricity and water supply cut off, even basic daily functions are difficult to perform.

[Soundbite] Park Seung-kyu(Ulsan Resident) : "Water and electricity have been cut off at my house, so I can't cook. It's the same with all the apartments in the complex."

Although the typhoon has passed, efforts to recover from the damage are just beginning.
