In our next story: how did the ideal city look to Koreans three centuries ago? An 18th-century painting on the envisioned city has been given new life in 3D. Let's take a look.

A city is encircled by a fortress. A painting on an eight-panel folding screen depicts thriving stores and extravagant buildings. Roughly 2,000 people appear in the image. In a lively atmosphere, groups of people buy and sell various items. In other corner, equipment is used to build a building. Farmers can be seen busy at work. This is a 3D recreation of the "Taepyongseongsido," a late Joseon period painting which depicts hopes for a new city.

[Soundbite] Jang Jin-a(Arts researcher, National Museum of Korea) : "The prosperous and affluent life appears to be an ideal dreamt of by the people at that time."

A monkey performs tricks for an audience. An exotic image of a camel passing in the street illustrates the active cultural commerce of the time. The exhibition also features Ming and Qing dynasty paintings from roughly the same period in history that are national treasures in China, and depictions of Japanese cities. They illustrate the societies of the three Northeast Asian countries, where commercial development led to a surge in the population. The exhibition offers an opportunity to compare the cities dreamed of by people of the time, and the artistic world which they created.
