The U.S.-based think tank Rand Corporation has issued a report that claims that by as early as 2020, North Korea may have up to 100 nuclear weapons in its arsenal and deploy them in the field to threaten the continental United States. Here’s more in our first story.

Rand Corporation forecast that North Korea would possess between 50 and 100 nuclear weapons by 2020. The U.S.-based think tank also projected that North Korea may operate nuclear-tipped missiles by 2020 to threaten the continental U.S.A. In a report titled "Informing Incoming Government Leaders" Rand Corporation talked about North Korea's nuclear issue as the first of the five greatest threats to the next U.S. administration. The report also claimed that some in South Korea and Japan are losing faith in the U.S. nuclear umbrella and calling for independent nuclear arsenals and that if South Korea and Japan decides to develop their own nuclear weapons, that could fundamentally change the security dynamics in Northeast Asia and question the viability of the Nonproliferation Treaty. Rand Corporation advised that the incoming U.S. government should decide what level of North Korea's nuclear development is truly unacceptable and what it could do about it before that moment arrives.
