Coast Guard Funeral

A joint funeral was held for two officers of the Korea Coast Guard's Special Sea Attack Team, who perished while rescuing workers who had been swept by sea waves in Samcheon on November 8.

Two heroes from the Special Sea Attack Team of the Korea Coast Guard did not hesitate to jump into the ocean to rescue workers who were stranded in swell-like waves during the construction of a coastal hiking trail. But they were swept away by the rough waves and eventually perished. A joint funeral has been held for late Police Lieutenant Kim Hyung-wook and late Corporal Park Kwon-byung. Their bereaved families were devastated by the unexpected deaths of their loved ones. To their colleagues, it's just heartbreaking to see some of their team members pass away.

On the day when Police Lieutenant Kim Hyung-wook went missing in the accident, it was his daughter's fifth birthday. The following day was also the anniversary of his father's death. Late Corporal Park Kwon-byung left behind his pregnant wife and a three-year-old daughter. The two heroes have been laid to rest at the Daejeon National Cemetery. They were also promoted and received medals posthumously.
