Getting Ready for Winter

With sudden cold grip overtaking the nation, the animals at one Korean zoo are bracing for the coming winter. We’ll take you there in our next report.

Three elephants slowly wander around an indoor cage. A baby elephant, which enjoyed cold water showers to cool off in the summer, now stays close to its mother for warmth. Hamadryas baboons mainly live in Africa. They huddle together for warmth due to the sudden cold weather. A warm wood cave is the best place to pass the winter for meerkats, which are also from Africa.

[Soundbite] Kim Hyun-joon(Suwon Resident) : "My children are happy to see the various animals all together. It's nice to see the animals doing well in the winter."

A Siberian tiger, which is accustomed to the cold, appears happy. Moving its massive body, the tiger expertly catches a live chicken and quickly eats its fill. Otters, which also enjoy the winter, are treated with fish and swim in the water at a leisurely pace.

[Soundbite] Oh Hyun-taek(Zookeeper, Seoul Grand Park) : "We are encouraging the activities of animals accustomed to the cold by giving them more toys."

With the arrival of the winter as autumn fades away, zoo animals are bracing for the cold weather, each in its own way.
