UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon delivered a farewell address at the UN General Assembly to mark the end of his ten-year tenure later this month. Recalling that he grew up with UN aid after the Korean War, Ban said that he has more deeply realized the power of international cooperation while serving at the UN. He extended special thanks to the government and people of South Korea.

It was noted that during his time in office, his efforts on the Paris Agreement on climate change and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development would help leave behind a safer and more peaceful world. Following Ban's farewell speech, an inauguration ceremony was held for new UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres who took the oath of office for his five-year term, which begins in January next year. The incoming secretary general said that the UN is becoming a target along with governments and leaders around the world as entities that are losing public trust. He signaled he would make intensive organizational reforms, including the introduction of an accountable evaluation system, saying that now is the time for the UN to change.
