South Korea has become the fourth country in the world to launch a pilot operation of fuel cell electric taxis, which run on a technology celebrated for having low impact on the environment. Here’s the story.

A procession of ten white taxis drives along a road. These are hydrogen fuel cell taxis, whose pilot operation began in Ulsan on Wednesday. They charge the same fare as regular taxis, but emit only water vapor instead of exhaust fumes while making almost no noise at all.
[Soundbite] Hong Yoo-jung(Taxi Driver) : "I would turn in off and on repeatedly because I thought the engine was off. That's how quiet it is."
It takes about five minutes to fill the fuel tank of a hydrogen car, enough to make it run for up to 415 kilometers, more than twice the range of regular electric cars. With no engine, fuel cell cars do not emit exhaust fumes. On the contrary, they even absorb fine dust particles during their operation.
[Soundbite] Park Yong-seon(Fuel Cell System Testing Team, Hyundai Motor) : "By operating environmentally-friendly hydrogen-fueled taxis on a pilot basis, we aim to make them easily accessible to the public."
Korea is the fourth country in the world to introduce hydrogen-fueled taxis after France, the Netherlands and Denmark. Next year, the Korean government plans to provide 130 fuel cell cars to Gwangju and Changwon as well.
