The 62nd Memorial Day Ceremony began with a moment of silence for those who died defending the nation. President Moon Jae-in emphasized in his address that all those who had devoted themselves to defend the nation should be respected as patriots, regardless of their political leanings or age. He also stated that he will not repeat outdated politics which used the history of patriotism to govern the nation.

President Moon said that patriotism should not be rewarded with only empty words of honor and promised to improve measures for veterans. He also promised that the state will take care of those who suffer illnesses or disabilities from fighting in wars.

The President also showed his non-authoritarian demeanor by seating injured soldiers next to him instead of ranking government officials and personally helping a frail veteran come down from the stage. Following the ceremony, he visited a veterans' hospital where a rehab program was underway to comfort the patients and their families and pledge more support.
