Summer is also the season when we might reach for some cooler clothes, quite literally. Today actually marks the start of a festival celebrating the quality and history of a local fabric registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Hansan mosi or fine ramie fabric is a 1,500-year-old Korean tradition. This hand-made fabric requires great effort and care over a long period of time. The entire process of weaving Hansan mosi was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011. In celebration of this heritage, the 28th Hansan Mosi Culture Festival opens today. Large crowds of people looking for the cool mosi clothes are expected to attend the festival. One of the most popular festival events is the mosi fashion show, which will be held today and tomorrow. Professional models and local residents take part in the mosi fashion show to display the beauty of mosi clothes. Another eye-catching event at the festival is likely to be the Jeosan Pareup Gilssam Nori, which is a reenactment of the traditional mosi-weaving work. This performance demonstrates the entire fabric-making process, from boiling and drying mosi to spinning out each thread. Some 70 different programs, such as make-your-own mosi fabric and mosi food fair events, are also available for festival visitors. The Hansan Mosi Culture Festival promoting the elegant beauty of Hansan fine ramie fabric will continue until next Monday, June 12th.
