A cute puppy rushes out to greet us at the entrance. As an indoor gate opens wide, a panoramic, uninterrupted view spreads outside the windows. The white tiled floor of the kitchen attracts attention with its herringbone pattern. This is a space for the wife, a handicraft artist.

[Soundbite] Jeong Mi-hye(Wife) : "When I moved in, the house was dark, decorated in dark wood and black. So I used decorative sheets and newly painted to change into a bright atmosphere."

Let's take a close look around the house. Decorated with wood, the living room exudes a cozy, comfortable atmosphere. A string artwork made by the wife and a box-like table catch the eyes. Foldable doors divide the living room and the balcony. When the doors are open, it feels as if the house has suddenly doubled in size. Folding doors are also effective for maintaining room temperature.

[Soundbite] Lee Jeong-hoon(Husband) : "It is cool when they are kept open in summer. In winter, it is warm with the doors closed."

A small dining space is located between the living room and the kitchen. The wife took on the job of renovating it. The wall was originally black and tiled. But the wife painted it white by herself. She used decorative sheets to dress up the cabinets. It looks like real marble.

[Soundbite] Jeong Mi-hye(Wife) : "This part was also in black. I attached white marble-like decorative sheets to cover it up."

Let's move on to the wife's gaily decorated studio. She also painted the room herself and adorned it with her works. Last, let's take a look at the kitchen. The couple poured in their greatest efforts to decorate the kitchen wall with a tile herringbone pattern.

[Soundbite] Jeong Mi-hye(Wife) : "Regular patterns on both sides are pretty. So I took great care to create this style."

Tiles' angle is crucial in adopting a herringbone pattern. A most perfect herringbone style is created when tiles are connected at an angle of 45 degrees. The couple themselves did everything from measuring to cutting tiles. This charming kitchen was created through their painstaking efforts to cut tiles fit for the wall. In a tiny area next to the kitchen, they installed a shelf and placed a small table to turn it into their private space. They often have a coffee break here.

[Soundbite] Jeong Mi-hye(Wife) : "I was worried a lot and went through lots of trials and errors. But it was finished well and I am satisfied with the final outcome."

They went through difficulties and hard times while renovating the house on their own. But they feel fulfilled, as they saved on renovation expenses by a whopping 70 percent. Their affection for the house has strengthened through the home decor process.
