[Soundbite] Chung Sye-kyun(Nat'l Assembly Speaker) : "I hereby declare that the confirmation motion for Supreme Court Chief Justice nominee Kim Myeong-su has been approved."
The National Assembly has approved of the confirmation motion for Supreme Court Chief Justice nominee Kim Myeong-su. The approval came 31 days after President Moon Jae-in picked Kim to lead the Supreme Court. Out of 299 eligible parliamentary representatives, all but one, who is in detention, have shown up for the vote. There were 160 votes for the motion, 134 against, one abstention and three invalid votes. There were ten more yes votes than the 150 votes required to pass the motion. If all 121 members of the ruling The Minjoo Party were added up with the votes from the liberal-leaning Justice Party and New People's Party and National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun, the total comes to 130. That means at least 30 votes came from the opposition camp. It is possible that more than half of the 40 lawmakers of the People's Party with casting votes decided to side with the ruling party and a few from the conservative Liberty Korea Party and Bareun Party have departed from the party line. Immediately after the passing of the confirmation motion, Kim Myeong-su made it clear of his commitment to reform the judiciary to work for the people.
[Soundbite] Kim Myeong-su(Supreme Court Chief Justice Nominee) : "The Court faces many challenges. I will overcome them wisely and make the judiciary work for the people."
Kim will officially begin his six-year term as the 16th Supreme Court Chief Justice on September 25th.
