There is a theater company presenting a children's play using an unusual prop: garbage. On this stage, discarded junk is reborn as a great way to entertain and educate children.

Bright lights illuminate the stage. Actors perform without words against the backdrop made of rusted metal drums and cardboard boxes. This bicycle handlebar was also recycled from everyday waste. The idea to use junk in a play came from a 40-year-old theater company in the Gyeongnam region in southeastern Korea.

[Soundbite] Lee Jin-hee(Member, Hyunjang Theater Company) : "Using the environment as a subject has educational effects. I wanted them to pay attention to waste."

It's already been over 10 years since the theater company members started using discarded goods as props. Things that were thrown away and
considered useless have been reborn as the new main characters on stage.

[Soundbite] Park Hyeon-jeong(Gyeongsangnam-do Prov. Resident) : "It was nice that junk has been recycled to help children use their imagination."

Junk art elevates discarded stuff into art by infusing them with ingenious ideas. At one side of the theater, children mix flour and coffee grind to make air fresheners.

[Soundbite] Yun Ju-hyeon(Elementary Student) : "It feels good. It's amazing to see how coffee grind can be used as an air freshener."

Scrap metals, paper waste, and recyclable goods are transformed into unique artistic materials to captivate young theater audiences.
