Upon finishing his visit to Vietnam, President Moon Jae-in arrived in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, where he attended a gala dinner marking the 50th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. ASEAN, which consists of ten Southeast Asian countries, is the core region of President Moon's "New Southern Policy." The ASEAN Plus Three Summit, which includes Korea, China and Japan, is taking place on Monday and Tuesday. Prior to the summit, President Moon attended the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit, which brought together dignitaries from ten ASEAN nations. President Moon introduced his ideas on building a community between Korea and ASEAN. He proposed a roadmap on implementing his New Southern Policy by promoting trade and exchange with the ASEAN region. After the ASEAN summit, President Moon will meet with the president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte. After his inauguration back in May, President Moon dispatched Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon as a special ASEAN envoy. At the upcoming meeting, Moon and Duterte will discuss ways to promote bilateral ties. The South Korean president will also meet with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang to discuss economic cooperation. This comes on the heels of the announcement of the normalization of Korea-China relations at summit talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
