Volunteers skilfully remove 500 charcoal briquettes scattered on the ground. They sort out broken briquettes and place them in large sacks. Those that have remained intact are piled up in a warehouse. This 79-year-old woman, who lives alone, appears relieved to receive help.

[Soundbite] Joo Mae-ja(Earthquake Victim) : "It's very helpful to me, but it must be hard for the volunteers."

Some 500 displaced residents stay at this shelter. Volunteers are here to provide counseling and comfort to those who have lost their homes because of the earthquake. They hold their hands and help them reduce their anxiety.

[Soundbite] (Volunteer) : "Try to think of things that make you feel at ease."

Some middle school students are also offering a helping hand at the shelter.

[Soundbite] "(I can't find the other shoe.) Look more. Do it right."

In the evening, the volunteers cook a warm meal for the displaced residents.

[Soundbite] Kim Ki-hwa(Volunteer) : "It's frustrating and sad to see all this. We will do our best till the last moment."

Some 11,000 volunteers from all walks of life, including firefighters, paramedics and members of religious groups, are helping earthquake victims in Pohang. Their service helps instill hope in those who have lost their precious homes during the earthquake.
