The United States has named South Korea among the countries that won’t have to worry about steep tariffs on steel and aluminum, for now. The U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said Washington has decided to put a pause on implementation of the tariffs until late April.

South Korea will avoid having to pay high U.S. tariffs on steel imports, at least temporarily. One day before the 25 percent tariffs on imported steel were to take effect, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said Washington has decided to postpone tariffs on South Korean steel until late April.

Other countries that have been temporarily exempted from the steel tariffs along with South Korea are the European Union, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Australia and Brazil. However, they must continue their negotiations on the preconditions of exemption with Washington. For South Korea, such preconditions are believed to include the re-negotiation of the bilateral free trade agreement with the United States. Seoul is reportedly considering making concessions in terms of pickup truck tariffs. The U.S. is to abolish its 25-percent tariff on imported pickup trucks three years from now. The Korean government is considering offering that the move be delayed. Meanwhile, a 25-percent tariff on steel and a 10-percent tariff on aluminum are to be imposed on all other countries like China and India on Friday afternoon Korea time.
