‘Great letter’

U.S. President Donald Trump has said that he received a "great letter" from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and has said that he expects the two to have another meeting soon. As Kim and Trump have both reaffirmed their will for a second summit, related efforts are expected to pick up speed.

US President Donald Trump had earlier expressed expectations to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in response to Kim's New Year speech. In the latest development, Trump revealed during a Cabinet meeting that he received a letter from Kim.

[Soundbite] Donald Trump(U.S. President) : "I just got a great letter from Kim Jong Un. This letter is a great letter... we've made a lot of progress with North Korea and Kim Jong Un."

Trump said the two sides established a "very good relationship" and "a lot of good things are happening," hinting at a second summit.

[Soundbite] Donald Trump(U.S. President) : "We'll probably now have another meeting. He'd like to meet, I'd like to meet. We've established a very good relationship."

Trump also said there would have been a big war in Asia if he hadn't met with Kim in Singapore last year. The remarks are viewed as an attempt to defuse skepticism over nuclear negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington which have been at a standstill since US Secretary of State
Mike Pompeo made his fourth visit to North Korea in October. Earlier regarding Kim's expressed commitment to "complete denuclearization" indicated in his New Year address, Trump said that Kim is well aware of his country's "tremendous economic potential" and that he looks forward to meeting with him. Through letter diplomacy, the two sides appear to have affirmed their will to realizing a second summit at an early date. Therefore efforts are expected to follow to agree on US measures such as easing of sanctions that can correspond with steps of denuclearization taken so far by North Korea.
