The lunar New Year's holiday is approaching fast and the manufacturers of Korean sweets and rice cakes are extremely busy filling the order for their traditional food items made with locally grown crops. Let's take a look

Sweet rice dough covered in white rice powder is cut into palm-sized pieces. They are dried for about eight hours and then fried in oil before being drenched in sweet rice syrup. Lastly, they're covered with crispy puffed rice to be made into a scrumptious Korean sweet snack. The maker of this traditional snacks has personally grown most of the ingredients that go into traditional snacks, such as sweet rice, sesame seeds, and beans. It's hard to keep up with the orders flooding in, since they insist on making the sweets by hand just like the traditional method.

[Soundbite] Shin Jin-myeong(CEO, Korean Snack Company) : "I continue on with the traditional method because I want to provide the elderly with the flavors of Korean sweets they remember from their childhood."

This rice cake maker is also busy in time for the Seol holiday. The workers' hands move quickly to roll dough made with local specialties, oats and mulberries into balls. After steaming the balls and rolling them in nutty bread crumbs, healthy rice cakes made with locally produced crops are ready to eat. These rice cakes have become a steady seller as they came to be known as a healthy food with high fiber content. The ddeok manufacturer sees quite a lot of people coming in person to buy the treats as well as a steady stream of online orders.

Processed foods made with locally grown crops are enjoying brisk sales ahead of the lunar New Year's holiday.
