The deserted Nodeul Island in the heart of Seoul has been transformed into a cultural hub where the public can enjoy music and reading. We take you there right now.

Nodeul Island is a manmade island that was created in 1917 during the construction of a footbridge over the Hangang River. It used to be a popular spot for skating in winter and swimming in summer. But for nearly half a century the island has been deserted after many development projects were scrapped in the 1970s. Recently, Nodeul Island has undergone a major transformation after two years of renovation. It is now home to several new structures standing against the background of cars on the Hangang Bridge. The most eye-catching of them is a three-storey cultural center. The first floor houses a performance hall. Equipped with sound and lighting equipment and musical instruments, the hall will stage concerts every weekend. There is also an outdoor performance venue that can accommodate three thousand.

[Soundbite] MAENG PIL-SOO(ARCHITECT WHO DESIGNED NODEUL ISLAND) : "Our goal was to show the diverse landscape of Seoul against the Hangang River and create structures that go well with the local scenery."

From a library where publishers can introduce new books to a workshop decorated with lush greenery to a wide range of restaurants - Nodeul Island offers visitors much to see and try.

[Soundbite] KANG MAENG-HOO(SEOUL CITY GOVERNMENT) : "Even when concerts are not held, visitors can come here any time to enjoy the green space and food."

The official opening of Nodeul Island is slated for September 28. Visitors are urged to use public transportation including water taxis, as there is no parking lot on the island.
