DONATION TRENDS AMONG TEENAGERS

Donations to help out the needy are pouring in from all walks of life. The practice of giving small yet steady donations is spreading fast especially among children and teenagers.

These elementary school students are completely immersed in reading.

[Soundbite] "She was thanking her father, when the hunter showed up."

These children were given 10 won in allowance for every page they read. The three girls read more than 10,000 pages over two months to collect 100,000 won. They decided to give the money to a nonprofit organization called Community Chest of Korea.

[Soundbite] KIM CHAE-EUN, YU YEONG-MIN & KIM HYO-RI(3RD GRADERS) : "We hope the money will be used to help those in need. Donating feels great."

These high schoolers donate 5,000 won every month to support a school-building project in Uganda. In 2019, some 390 students from 15 high schools in Jeju collected 24 million won to take part in the Uganda charity program organized by the Child Fund Korea.

[Soundbite] MOON HEE-SEO & JEONG JI-WON(HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS) : "We pay more attention to news about refugees and think about ways to make donations."

Last year more than 220 teenagers under 19 years of age made donations to the Jeju chapter of Community Chest of Korea.

[Soundbite] BYEON JEONG-GEUN(JEJU HQ, CHILDFUND KOREA) : "Donations are made in various ways. They can do it through club activities or by holding flea markets."

Donations from these youths give hope and remind the world that small acts of charity can make a big difference.
