Pentathlon athletes compete in fencing, swimming, horse-back riding, shooting and track-and-field events on the same day. In Korea, where such athletes are in short supply, competing in the pentathlon can seem unrealistic. Still the national pentathlon team is determined to create a miracle in the Rio Olympics.

Athletes practice running like track-and-field athletes and start shooting right away with no time for a break. They are always pressed for time, as they have to train in five events every day. Korean pentathlon athletes first competed in the Olympics at the 1964 Tokyo Games, but they have won no medals so far. The pentathlon is not well-known locally, and training conditions are so deficient that the athletes have to rent military facilities to practice. But the national team is confident of producing good results at the upcoming Rio Olympics, because one of its athletes is Jeon Woong-tae, winner of this year's World Modern Pentathlon Championships.

[Soundbite] Jeon Woong-tae(Nat'l Pentathlon Athlete) : "I am a bit upset because it's not a popular sport, but I will produce good results in Rio to change the public perception."

Race walking is another relatively unknown event in Korea, but the national team is dreaming of a miracle in Rio despite the miserable training conditions. Thirty-two-year-old Kim Hyun-seop is more desperate than anyone to perform well in Rio because it may be his last chance to compete in the Olympics.

[Soundbite] Kim Hyun-seop(Nat'l Race Walking Athlete) : "We won three medals in a row in the Asian Games, albeit not gold. We are eager to win an Olympic medal because there have been no significant achievements in the Olympics thus far."

Despite the low recognition, Korea's national pentathlon and race walking athletes are preparing to write a new chapter in the history of their respective sports by reaping the results of their arduous efforts over the past four years.
