Heavy rains are pounding South Korea, causing substantial damage nationwide. Disaster authorities and local governments across the nation are hard at work on emergency alert. Here is the story.

The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters is staying on alert, as damage from heavy rains are being reported and heavy rain warnings are in effect for many regions around the nation. Some 4,700 officials of local governments and related agencies are also working in emergency mode. In contingency efforts, they will check 2,700 places that are deemed vulnerable to landslides. 26,000 sets of emergency supplies have been prepared for provinces where heavy rain warnings were issued. With rain continuing, 103 trails have been closed down at seven national parks. Traffic controls are in place and flights have been canceled. A total of 16 flights were canceled in Gimpo, Pohang, Yeosu airports while 21 passenger ships were grounded. Ten temporary shelters have been provided to 206 displaced people. With water levels rising, dams near the Hangang River have increased the amount of water discharge.
