Temperatures have topped 30 degrees Celsius in downtown Seoul. A cool beverage is the first thing that comes to mind.

[Soundbite] Kim Jae-won(Seoul Resident) : "I had cold coffee but am still hot. I'm thinking of getting ice cream with my friends later."

During lunchtime, diners flock to naengmyeon restaurants that sell cold noodles., After a long wait, customers gulp down their noodles and briefly forget about the sweltering heat.

[Soundbite] Son Tae-seong(Seoul Resident) : "Naengmyeon(cold noodle dish) naturally comes to mind in the hot weather. After eating it, your body feels cool as you venture back outside."

People who were unable to eat traditional heat-beating dishes at the start of the hottest period in the lunar calendar head to samgyetang restaurants specializing in chicken-ginseng soup. A whole chicken in warm broth is a fine way to recover lost energy.

[Soundbite] Jang Gab-soo(Seoul Resident) : "I heard it's good for rejuvenating the body so I came here. I do feel energized having something I normally don't eat."

Hot or cold, citizens are trying to beat the sweltering weather in their own different ways.
