About 30 young North Korean escapees received a chance to experience life in South Korea's Special Warfare Command. Despite the harsh training in the scorching weather, it was a meaningful experience that helped them boost their self-esteem and sense of belonging as new South Korean citizens.

Young North Korean escapees donning military uniforms run in the sultry weather with heavy boats in their arms. By carrying boats each weighing a hundred kilograms, the trainees acquire teamwork skills.

[Soundbite] Kim Kwang-myung(N. Korean escapee) : "We learned how to trust one another because everyone had to work hard to carry the boat."

This time, the trainees put on more clothes on top of their uniforms and special helmets to jump off an 11-meter-tall tower.

[Soundbite] "Trainee Chang Jung-hyuk is ready to jump off! Jump, jump! Trainee Chang Jung-hyuk is ready to jump off! Jump! I love you, Mom!"

After a moment of hesitation, the trainees muster the courage and jump off with their bodies hanging on a rope. All of the trainees received honorary badges for successfully accomplishing the mission.

[Soundbite] Lim Hyun-jin(N. Korean escapee) : "I was scared at first, but it turned out to be fun."

After the harsh training, the students gathered around a bonfire to share the stories of their lives in North Korea and express appreciation for being able to live in the South.

[Soundbite] N. Korean escapee : "I have lived like a fool. I don't know whose fault it is when you live in a despotic country."

The students said that the training helped them boost their self-esteem and sense of belonging as citizens of the Republic of Korea.
