This is the Korean women's national volleyball team playing against the Soviets in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Even at a glance the Korean players were noticeably shorter than their Soviet counterparts. The average height difference was 11 centimeters back then. But 28 years later The height of Korean volleyball players doesn't seem all that different from that of Northern European players. In fact, the average height of starting forwards is 188 centimeters for both teams. A British team of researchers tracked the average heights of men and women in 200 countries over the past 100 years. The study found that the average height of Korean women measured 142 centimeters in 1914, but grew 20 centimeters in the past 100 years since then. Korean women showed the biggest height gain in the world, outgrowing Japanese, Chinese, and American women. Korean men also grew 15 centimeters taller than 100 years before to an average of 174.9 centimeters, standing third in height gain in the world.
[Soundbite] Dr. Sung Eun-ju(Family Practice, Kangbuk Samsung Hospital) : "Koreans suffered from many infectious and wasting diseases that deprived them of chances to grow, but that hasn't been the case lately."
Such a remarkable growth spurt is attributed to dramatic improvements in the environmental factors which affect height growth, such as nutrition and hygiene, as well as economic development.
