Clinical trials have shown that the Korean indigenous ginseng variety, Goryeo ginseng, helps alleviate psychological stress and improve the quality of sleep. Here’s more.

The results of a study show that Korean ginseng known as "Goryeo ginseng" has a calming effect. Clinical trials conducted jointly by the Rural Development Administ ration and psychiatrists from Kyunghee University on 70 people for 12 weeks have shown that 35 of the subjects who took a three-gram capsule of Goryeo ginseng daily were less stressed mentally and had a better quality of sleep than the control group. They were also found to have anxiety levels 48.1 percent lower on the Hamilton Anxiety Scale than the control group, attesting to the relaxing effect of Goryeo ginseng.

[Soundbite] Prof. Kim Jong-woo(Kyunghee Univ.) : "Stress can cause anxiety, depression and insomnia. When taking ginseng, those symptoms improve through stress release."

The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, which indicates the quality of sleep, was found to be 13.6 percent higher in those who took ginseng capsules.

[Soundbite] Lee Seung-eun(Rural Development Administration) : "This study has revealed a new possibility and is expected to help ginseng farmers increase their profits and boost the ginseng industry."

The Rural Development Administration plans to register white ginseng, the raw material of Goryeo ginseng, as a health supplement product with relaxing effects.
