The National Assembly's impeachment panel has asked the Constitutional Court to order President Park Geun-hye to appear before the court to offer an explanation to the Korean people.

[Soundbite] Rep. Kwon Seong-dong(Chief of National Assembly Impeachment Panel) : "We asked the court to order Pres. Park's appearance before the court as she needs an opportunity to explain herself to the Korean people in an open court."

The panel however noted that if Park refuses to show up, there is no way under the Constitutional Court Act to force her appearance. The panel has also requested 27 witnesses to testify in the impeachment proceedings including Park's former chief of staff Kim Ki-choon and former presidential secretary for civil affairs Woo Byung-woo. The parliamentary panel on Park's impeachment case also refuted, point by point, the president's defense statement drafted by her legal team. Regarding Park's argument that the impeachment motion violated the rule of presumption of innocence, the panel said the rule only applies to criminal procedures. Park's lawyers also claimed the impeachment based on mass public protests is against the Constitution which bans seeking a vote of confidence on the president through a public referendum. The panel refuted this claim by saying that the president's resignation is not subject to a referendum and therefore requires an impeachment process.
