Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has personally met with the wife of a Korean businessman in his 50s surnamed Ji who was shot to death by Filipino police officers. He apologized for the incident and expressed deep regret. The president also said a thorough investigation was under way to ascertain the facts and punish the assailants, and that most of the suspects have been identified. Duterte also issued an apology and strongly condemned those implicated in the murder last Thursday.

[Soundbite] Rodrigo Duterte(Philippine President) : "I could even send the heads of those involved in the crime to Korea."

President Duterte also declared a temporary suspension of his war on drugs to focus resources on rooting out corruption within the police force. He ordered the disbandment of the existing narcotics unit to establish a new body. Corrupt police officers will be placed in dangerous rebel subjugation operations where their lives could be at risk.

[Soundbite] Ronald dela Rosa(Chief of Philippine National Police) : "We will suspend anti-drug operations for the time being and focus all our energy on rooting out corruption until the police force becomes clean."

The Philippine government has also urged three suspects implicated in the recent incident who are employed by the National Bureau of Investigation, an agency under the Department of Justice, to turn themselves in. A reward of one million pesos, or roughly 20 thousand U.S. dollars, has also been posted.
