While the recent cold snap in Korea has been a burden for some, there is a place that welcomes the heavy snow and freezing weather. Follow us to Gangwondo Province where pollack are being dried.

When winter comes to this site, pollack is hung in the air to be dried. Several million fish are hung up in rows upon rows at these facilities.

[Soundbite] Lee Dal-ho(Inje-gun County Resident) : "The drying is progressing appropriately, thanks to the continued cold weather."

The process is well under way at another site some 650 meters above sea level, to produce dried pollack. The fish are turned into top quality products through the repeated process of freezing and melting. The procedure is going especially smoothly this year thanks to the frequent snow and freezing weather recently, in addition to the lower temperatures at high altitudes.

[Soundbite] Ra Heung-soo(Head of Dried Pollack Producer) : "When it snows, the fish absorb the moisture and maintain their plumpness."

Around 58 million pollacks are estimated to be hung on drying racks nationwide this winter including in Gangwon-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do Provinces. Once the winter passes, the dried fish will undergo final processing and eventually appear on tables by the end of May or early June.
