Internet-only banks are making a splash in the finance sector. A new service known as Kakao Bank, operated by the same corporation behind the messaging platform KakaoTalk, will soon jump into the market as well.

Korea's very first Internet-only bank, K-Bank, is off to a great start. In just 3 days after launching, K-Bank has attracted over 88-thousand accounts. The speed does not compare to existing banks. The number of accounts K-Bank has opened in one day would take offline banks one month. Time deposits with an interest rate of 2 percent have attracted over 17.7 million dollars. The nation's second Internet-only bank Kakao Bank is even more aggressive in its marketing. The bank seeks to make the best use of the Kakao Talk messaging service used by over 40 million people to allow for easy money transfers with service fees only a tenth of what is charged by existing commercial banks.

[Soundbite] Yoon Ho-young(Joint Chairman, Kakao Bank) : "Overseas remittances can be easily carried out. Our service charges are also very affordable."

Existing banks did not regard the newcomers as a particular threat. Now they are on high alert. Deposit options with higher interest rates in the 2 percent range have reemerged. Existing banks are also introducing smartphone-based loan deals in response to the onslaught of Internet-only rivals. They will also close some 170 offline branches to focus on their mobile divisions. Such changes are expected to shake up the financial market landscape.

[Soundbite] So Seong-mo(Digital Banking Division, Nonghyup Bank) : "We can only remain competitive by strengthening services incorporating the latest technologies. We plan to make our financial products in the digital banking sector more competitive."

However there are also tasks remaining for Internet-only banks including security concerns and how to deal with current regulations under which increasing capital is a hefty challenge.
