It's only been about 20 years since Korean farmers began growing asparagus. Imports still take up a large volume but high quality domestic asparagus is increasingly opening up export channels.

A long, stick-shaped vegetable can be spotted inside this greenhouse. It is asparagus, which is sweet in taste and rich in protein and minerals. It can be harvested 3 years after the seeds are sown.

[Soundbite] Kim Yeong-rim(Asparagus Farmer) : "Asparagus is a good crop in terms of labor cost and the fact that its yield lasts 15-20 years."

Gangwon-do Province is the biggest producer of asparagus in Korea, thanks to its cool climate. Output is growing each year. Export channels are also expanding. Korean asparagus from Gangwon-do province is being recognized overseas for its quality, and some 40 tons will be shipped to Japan this year.

[Soundbite] "These are for export to Japan, and those are for domestic sales."

Korea still relies on imports for 60 percent of its 1,000 tons of domestic asparagus consumption, but the export volume is rising.

[Soundbite] Park Heung-gyu(Gangwondo Agricultural Research & Extension Services) : "We aim to establish higher price levels and overcome difficult conditions at home with the agriculture industry through exports."

With widening export channels, homegrown asparagus is emerging as a newly profitable crop.
